<img haven't posted pics before on this forum... so... here goes a first attempt...

Anyhew if it works what you'll see is the damage from rowing through Sock-<imgt-To-Me on West Water. I posted the story a few days back.

What blows my mind is where this failure occured in the wood.... <img would have assumed that this block would have blown out at it's thinest point near the bushing... NOT along it's widest point behind the bushing and BEHIND the dovetail!

Kinda' a bit strange eh?

Powerful stuff that flowin' water! ;)

Here's my attempt at pics:
1st is a top view of an intact dovetailed station
2nd Top veiw of Blown out oarlock station
3rd Side view of blow out. Note the evidence of where the dovetail overlaped the block and it still
oke through!

<imgf the pics fail to post...
keep an eye out for a post to follow.

Cheers!

Borba

Hi Dave:

...that looks like walnut. Is it?

Walnut is dense and beautiful, but easily split.

Ash or white oak or high density plastic blocks might
(would be) be a better choice.

Wow!

I'm leaning towards Corion for my boat.

For further consideration the grain of the oarlock blocks appears to be in line with the vertical shaft of the oarlock. It would seem that running the grain in a perpendicular orientation in regards to the oar lock's shaft would be stronger. Just a thought.
